The civilian coup plotters launched the coup attempt [Friday, Feb. 24, 2006], after former President Joseph Estrada’s handlers drove him to the San Juan Medical Center from Tanay, Rizal, to have a cyst on right eye removed.

AFP sources said Brig. Gen. Danilo Lim, commander of the army’s First Scout Ranger Company was supposed to join the scheduled 8 a.m. Mass to be officiated by [maverick] Bishop Deogracias Yniguez at the Edsa shrine yesterday morning and then to announce his withdrawal of support for the Arroyo administration.

Lim’s men were supposed to follow him to Edsa, but they failed to do so after AFP Chief General Generoso Senga took him under his custody. Also taken under custody was Chief Supt. Marcelino Franco, chief of the Philippine National Police’s Special Action Force.
